About Claire

Claire Chitham is an award-winning actor and creative hailing from New Zealand, with a passion for helping others bring their stories to life.

Star of stage and screen for over thirty years, Claire has evolved her portfolio to include work as an Acting Coach, VO Artist, Author, MC, Speaker & Wellbeing Ambassador, as well as helped direct and produce projects across the entertainment industry.

Claire’s insightful communication skills, natural warmth and attuned intuition lend themselves to many tasks, with a focus on coaching and directing others to unearth whatever truth is at the core of their brand, their performance, or their mission.

I have been embedded in the film industry for years and having worked on both sides of the camera and experienced the business from all angles, I have come to love it all. I love pulling a script apart, excavating story, characters, ideas, and helping practitioners and actors put it back together in a way that translates beautifully to the screen and makes performances shine.

I deeply understand the intricacies and difficulties of working in the screen industry and on set; the excitement, the overwhelm, the responsibilities, and also the work ethic required to succeed and survive in this business. I have a particular passion for working with children and teenagers, having started myself in the industry at age 12. I’m an advocate for helping them to understand it all and enjoy it at the same time.

My goal is to help enhance, empower and uncover the best performance from each actor - no matter how big or small the role. And to find ways to best serve the needs of directors and producers as well. I look forward to working with you,

Hi there,

Experience

Alongside my varied acting career I have experience as an acting coach, on-set and off. I coached the young leads of the US TV series Power Rangers for two seasons, seven teenagers on NZFC short film Pack Rat and most recently was on-set coach to young star Nell Fisher in her lead role in the upcoming feature film Bookworm. I coach young talent for their auditions and assist them with shooting self-tapes. On set I work closely with the director to make sure we are creating and crafting their vision, and doing it quickly and efficiently.

With the amazing guidance of coach Miranda Harcourt I have honed my skillset so that I have a practical and applicable toolbox to help actors get to the truth of a performance, and quickly. I follow her mantra of trying to find our way to performances that are grounded and naturalistic.

I have combined these tools with my experience from studying various acting methodologies over the years ‘borrowing’ from Adler, Chekhov, Meisner, Strasberg, Stanislavski, Moss & more, to build my own toolbox and approach that can be applied to any script, to any role, and to help turn that into your own. For me, it’s always about empowering the actor to feel like they have the tools, the awareness, the emotional senses embedded, so they can use them when and where necessary.

Actors love working with directors because we need objectivity. We need outside help to dig in to whats happening on the inside. That’s what I’m here for.

I’m also a fierce advocate for how children are cared for and protected on set, a place that can often become chaotic and confusing, but with the right approach can be an educational, magical and enriching place too.

I have also voiced video games and commercials internationally, MC’d and hosted live events, run wellbeing workshops, written a book on Gut Health, created content for brands for nationwide publications, presented on live television, and I’m currently writing a fictional novel and developing content for screen. I’m not one for boredom!

“For children, teenagers and young adults being on a set can be so exciting they want to burst or so overwhelming they want to hide. I’m there to help guide them through all those feelings and channel those emotions into their work. To help manage their energy levels, keep them engaged or rested, to listen, to be an advocate for them in that unique world, and help them deliver engaging performances.

And I make sure every part of the process is fun - from learning lines to learning everyones names!”
